Adopt a feathered friend with WWT (Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust) – you can get anything from a flamingo to a swan and adopt it starting from £2 a month – much cleaner than a real pet and much less hassle – plus youre doing a good thing for nature. They give you certificates and passes to come and visit it so a good deal.
